Description
This is the “Upper Twin Waterfall” along Heberly Run in Pennsylvania State Game Lands #13. This view was captured from atop the cliff overlooking the falls. We did not bring the right gear to repel down to the stream bed on this hike. Next time, we will come better prepared to get some shots from the water’s edge.
This high angle had one great advantage …it revealed the incredible emerald green color of the water in the fall’s plunge pool. The colors you see here have not been “enhanced”, that really is the way the water appears to the naked eye. The site is surrounded by countless conifers, hemlock trees, birch, oak and maple trees. The ground is also covered with dark green mosses and ferns. All of this striking greenery is reflected off of the crystal clear waters of Heberly Run, to reveal the gorgeous hues you see in the photograph.
As all waterfall photographers know, direct sunlight is the mortal enemy of a well captured falls image …usually rendering the shot nearly worthless (from the technical perspective). However, in this case, the way the sun brought out the brilliant colors in the water in the stream below easily made up for the “blowouts” on the face of the falls (…for me, anyway).
These waterfalls are fairly difficult to reach and remain nearly untouched by the “hand of man”. The terrain is very steep and quite rugged. Fortunately, that discourages visits by the kind of people who are less than respectful of the true beauty of nature. There are no groomed trails here, just undisturbed wilderness. Only hikers who are prepared to do a little “bushwacking” will have the chance to see this wonderful site in person.
I had a fantastic time hiking through this amazing forest on September 1st, 2011, with fellow photographers Aaron Campbell and Tim Devine (Tim coordinated the trip and was our very capable guide). It was a wonderful day of exploring the north eastern Pennsylvania wilds with a couple of like-minded friends.
Please show respect when visiting natural treasures like this wonderful site. Leave it exactly as you found it so others who follow will be able to enjoy the same pristine discovery that you experienced.
State Game Lands 13 is located near the community of Jamison City in the “Endless Mountains” region of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, USA.
This photo was captured with a Canon EOS 10D body fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens, at the 38mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/6th second at f/11, ISO 100. A Manfrotto, tripod was used with a pistol grip head.
