Description
What a gorgeous wilderness area to visit, even on a damp drizzly day. It’s know as Pennsylvania State Game Lands #13, but you don’t need to be a hunter to enjoy this truly pristine nature area. This lush mountain forest is home to quite a few fantastic waterfalls… among them is “Big Falls”, the beautiful landmark you see pictured here.
The reason that these waterfalls, streams and forest are so completely untouched by the destructive “hand of man” is because the site is fairly difficult to reach. The terrain is very steep and rugged, perfect for discouraging the type of “people” (I use that term loosely) who tend to leave ugly trash and destruction in their wake. There are no trails here, blazed or otherwise, just undisturbed wilderness with amazing views around every bend in the creek.
I had the great pleasure of hiking through this amazing forest on September 1st, 2011, with fellow photographers Aaron Campbell and Tim Devine as our intrepid guide. It was a great day of exploring with some really good friends.
Please show respect when visiting natural treasures like this wonderful site. Leave it exactly as you found it so others who follow will be able to enjoy the same breathtaking discovery that you experienced.
While setting up this shot, the unthinkable happened... my camera completely stopped working. The shutter had seized up... it had captured its very last photo forever. Fortunately, I had brought along my old EOS D30 body as a backup, just in case something like this might happen. The lower megapixel count was much more acceptable to me than getting no shots at all.
This image is presented "as-is", without any post-processing. The photo was captured with a Canon EOS D30 body fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens, at the 23mm focal length. The shutter speed was 0.5 seconds at f/14. An ND2 neutral density filter was used, with a circular polarizer stacked on front. ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a pistol grip head. This photo has been cropped slightly (too much gray sky at the top), but no post processing was required.

Gene - nice capture. It's hard sometimes capturing the fast running waters of a waterfall. It looks so refreshing. Nice colors. Nice composition. L/V.

Such a peaceful scene, beautifully done.

Thank you very much, Kathleen! It was very calm and peaceful. The deep rumble of the falling water was nature's mantra to soothe the soul. Wonderful wishes, Gene
