Description
This was the first time I ever saw this amazing rural landscape. The photograph was taken on October 29th, 2008, on a very windy, cold, overcast day. The setting sun was barely breaking through the gray clouds, off in the far away distance. The subdued light gave this autumn scene a very melancholy feeling that grabbed my heart.
Looking at this image always takes my mind straight back to this beautiful setting. I can feel exactly what I was feeling as I captured this shot. I was looking at an old house, in the middle of a very productive farmer's field, totally cut off from any access to the nearest road. There are no power or telephone lines running to the house.
I just could not help trying to envision all of the hard working people who had known this humble farmhouse as their family's home.
This dilapidated structure has obviously stood on this very spot for more than a hundred years. I wondered why it had never been torn down to clear more plowable space for growing crops. There must be a lot of very rich history behind this extremely mysterious place.
After thinking those questioning thoughts, I just stood there with the cold wind blowing in my face. I was completely content to just be enjoying the incredible view that was right there in front of my eyes!
Afterward, I wanted everyone who saw this photograph to be able to spend just a little time there, standing right beside me, with their eyes filled with this wonderful sight.
You could enjoy this incredible view yourself, if you would like. The photo was captured at the junction of Ridge Road and Upper Bartlow Road, east of Clarkstown, off of RT-442 in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, USA.
I can still enjoy this amazing view, standing alone in that same spot, but my fond memories and old photos are all that remain to evoke the special feeling of standing there with the mysterious farmhouse right before my eyes.
This is the cover photo on my calendar titled "The Forgotten Farmhouse". The calendar displays 13 photographs that were all captured in the very month that they represent. Almost four years were required to shoot and compile the finished collection of images. The calendar is offered for sale at RedBubble.com.
This photo was taken handheld with a Canon EOS DSLR through a Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L lens at 58mm focal length. The aperture was set to f/11 at a shutter speed of 1/500 sec. @ ISO 400.
