Description
F. L. Ricketts Waterfall faces due south, from near the top of Glen Leigh trail in Ricketts Glen State Park. Consequently, on a clear day, it is almost always bathed in the brightest direct sunlight. That's a wonderful sight to see... but it is extremely difficult to photograph, without the water becoming an ugly white blur in the picture.
After seeing the weather forecast for a crystal clear day, I came armed with my strongest ND filters and a good circular polarizer, to attempt to catch the shot "in camera".
This photo was captured on May 10th, 2011 with fellow photographers, Tim Devine and Kevin Hart.
Ricketts Glen State Park is located beside the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, about half way between the cities of Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.
This image was shot with a Canon 10D DSLR, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens, at the widest focal length of 17mm. A ND8 neutral density filter was stacked on the lens, with a circular polarizer in front. The aperture was set to f/22. Shutter speed was 1/4th second at ISO 100. A Manfrotto 550B tripod and 222 pistol grip head were used with a remote shutter release cable.
