Description
Mohawk Falls is usually the first Waterfall a visitor will encounter when hiking down the Falls Trail from the top of Ricketts Glen. It is the closest and easiest waterfall to reach on the Ganoga Glen Trail. Our hike had begun at the bottom of the gorge, so this was the last waterfall we photographed along the trail that we had taken to the top of the glen.
This waterfall is mostly hidden behind very thick foliage in the warmer months, from early spring through late autumn. Winter conditions offered a perfect opportunity to get a closer, unobstructed view. This shot was captured by standing on a temporary ice shelf, at the very edge of the falls. You are witnessing Mohawk's rebirth, as the ice that had fully encased this site was being slowly melted away by warmer late winter temperatures and the force of the rushing water.
Ricketts Glen is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in north eastern, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre.
This photo was taken in the evening of March 2nd, 2011 on a winter hike with Kevin Hart.
The image was captured with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 17mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1.5 sec at f/11, ISO 100. A light Bilora Super-Biloret tripod was used with a Bogen head.

Beautiful, it seems to be framed by the snow fv
Gene Walls replied:
Thanks Byron! A couple weeks before this shot was taken, the entire waterfall was hidden under a solid dome of ice. The spring runoff melted away the ice dome, revealing the falls, surrounded by the remnants of winter white. Kindest regards, Gene
