Description
Oneida Falls is a beautiful waterfall that is found in Ricketts Glen State Park, near the top of Ganoga Glen. This type of waterfall forms when there is a very hard rock layer in the creek bed. A porous layer of material is found underneath the rocky layer. Falling water erodes a plunge pool below the steep drop-off. Over time, the softer material is undercut, leaving the hard rock shelf suspended across the top edge of the waterfall, with a cave-like void exposed underneath.
Oneida is classified as a Curtain or Bridal Veil type waterfall. The "Bridal Veil" effect can be seen clearly in this image. The reduced summer flow limited the width of the "veil" here in August. In the spring, this watery curtain spanned the entire width of the falls, with no breaks in the veil. In very dry summers, only a few trickles of water can be found spilling over this ledge. This is a wonderful summer flow for Oneida.
This photograph was captured on August 16th, 2013 with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 5D DSLR body. The aperture was set to f/14 with a shutter speed of 15 seconds at the 21mm focal length, ISO 100. This is a "straight from the camera" image, without any cropping, post processing or alterations.
Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.
