Artist's Description
Shawnee Waterfall was still flowing when this shot was taken, on New Years Eve of 2012, but not for long. By late January the falls have certainly been completely frozen over ...cold, motionless and apparently dead, waiting for spring's miraculous renewal. Except, the churning sound of swiftly moving water still emanates from the within depths of the frozen winter shell.
The image was captured with a Canon 5D Full Frame DSLR camera with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens, at the widest 17mm focal length, shot @ f/11. Shutter speed speed was 1/4th of a second. The ISO was set to 100. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, with a Manfrotto 222 Pistol Grip head. A remote shutter release cable was also used.

Now that looks cold. Hind sight being what it is, I should have been looking for sights like this last week when we saw freezing conditions. Instead, I hung out at the lower reaches of our rivers. Great shot Gene. L&F
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you so much, Randy! This spot was so tough to reach from the bottom of the gorge that the coldness was not a big problem. We were getting very tired, though. Kindest regards, Gene
Marcia Lee Jones
I use to live not far from there!
Gene Walls replied:
I'm glad I'm only a hour or so away, Marcia. I go to Ricketts Glen as often as I can. Kindest regards, Gene

Stunning shot Gene! I especially like how the contrasting warm light at the top of the picture makes the icy landscape seem even more stark. Plus, the play of cascading water against the solid frozen backdrop makes for the perfect composition. V/f

Definite winter wonderland shot, those icicles are phenomenal surrounding the still flowing waters! The U shape creates an arena of drama, the frozen and static versus the energy of flow. What an incredible scene you've captured here, Gene! F&V#16 Wow!!
Gene Walls replied:
Your very kind assessment is deeply appreciated, Richard! This is where I spent last New Years Eve, knowing that it would be completely frozen over if I waited any longer. I prefer to see at least some flowing water at a waterfall, even in winter. Otherwise, the falls have no "life" to capture. Wonderful wishes, Gene
