Description
With only an hour available to visit Swallow Falls State Park, I rushed down to the Youghiogheny River to capture a few quick photos. This is the Lower Swallow Falls spillway.
It was a perfect late summer day, with not as much as a single cloud in the bright blue sky. That’s usually a wonderful thing …except when you want to snap a nice photograph of a waterfall. I tried my best to get the exposure just right, without annoying blowouts on the face of the falls.
Swallow Falls is located near the far western border of Maryland, in Garrett County. This spot is 9 miles from the town of Oakland, MD, near the West Virgina state line.
The shot was captured with a Canon EOS 5D camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens, at the 19mm focal length. The exposure was 0.4 sec @ f/9, ISO 100. A Manfrotto tripod and head were used, with a remote shutter cable.

great shot Gene. I'm trying to find some water to get my dreamy effect just right :)
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you so much, Jaclyn! Two simple rules: An ND-8 Filter and a very good tripod. That's all it takes to get a good long exposure on a bright day. Best wishes for your nice "smooth water" shot. Kindest wishes, Gene
