Artist's Description
This is Rainbow Falls, deep in the gorge in Watkins Glen State Park. This incredible place is located in upstate New York, USA, at the lower end of Seneca Lake. This area is also call the Finger Lakes district. It is one of the most unbelievable places I have ever visited.
Lush green vegetation covers much of the enormous rock canyon walls in late spring and summer. Almost every surface in this section of the glen is covered in thick moss, green vines and ferns. This creates an amazing green "glow" that must be seen to be believed! The calming sound of flowing water accompanies you throughout your entire hike in the gorge.
This photograph was captured with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 10D DSLR body. The aperture was f/4, shutter speed 1/15th sec at 40mm focal length. The camera & Lens were mounted on a Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto 222 joystick ball head. A remote shutter release was used to minimize movement.

My higher education includes Theological Studies, Electronics Engineering, Audio Engineering and Visual Arts. I taught a Media course at Pennsylvania College of Technology (Penn State Affiliate). Photography has been an integral part of my life since the mid 1960's. Capturing the beauty and complexity of nature is my main interest, from macro close-ups to wide vistas views ...and everything in between. Natural waterfalls are the most frequent photographic subjects found at the business end of my lens. Historic Covered Bridges and farmland scenes are also very close to my heart, but any visually interesting...

What a beautiful place. And nicely captured. The combinations of light and dark had to stress the camera's abilities somewhat!
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you so much, Kathy! Yes, the camera's dynamic range was definitely pushed beyond its limit for this one. (one sunny spot was blown-out a bit, but that was unavoidable.) Kindest regards, Gene
