Description
F. L. (Frank) Ricketts Waterfall is made up of many small steps that create these cascade style falls …way too many steps to count. Watching the water of Kitchen Creek tumble down this waterfall reminds me of seeing dozens of “slinky” toys going down stairs side-by-side (each starting from the top at slightly different times). The effect is very entertaining, if not completely hypnotic.
Daylight was fading very quickly here, it was after 6 PM already. I still had one more site to photograph yet. As soon as I was sure I had this shot “in the can”, I high-tailed it toward my 19th (and final) “named” waterfall of the day. There was still more than a mile of trail to be hiked before I could get my pack off of my back and head for home.
This photo was captured on October 18th, 2011, well past sunset. It was taken with a Canon 30D DSLR, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 27mm focal length. Manual exposure was used, the shutter speed was set to 1 second, with an aperture of f/7.1, ISO 125. No lens filters were used for this shot, due to the very dim lighting conditions. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, with a Manfrotto 222 Pistol Grip head. A remote shutter release cable was also used.
This image is “straight from the camera”, As-Is. The RAW camera format was simply converted to JPEG using Photoshop CS2, with no alterations or enhancements applied.
Ricketts Glen is located near the small village of Red Rock, PA, at the junction of Pennsylvania State Routes 118 and 487. The park is about midway between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, in the north eastern region of the USA.

Oh your waterfalls! I just love your work! fv
Gene Walls replied:
Thanks, Eti! This is one of the few times I ever visited this site when there was no bright sun shining on the water. I waited until it was very late so I could get this longer exposure shot. Best wishes, Gene

Superb exposure, make it look like silk flowing down hill. fv
Gene Walls replied:
Thanks, Byron! I really helped to arrive at this site so late in the day. Without sunlight, it was possible to get a nice long exposure shot here, for a change. Kindest regards, Gene
