Description
Just below Mohican Falls, there is a wonderful little waterfall that is almost completely hidden from view. You can barely see this beautiful cascade when look carefully from the wooden footbridge at the bottom of Mohican Falls. I call it the "Hidden Nameless Waterfall".
This officially unnamed waterfall was masked by one huge fallen tree and thick ground clutter for many years. With a little effort, it was a lovely waterfall to photograph. Recently, two more big trees have toppled across the front of the falls, nearly cutting it off completely from any access for taking pictures.
In an ill-advised moment, I suddenly wanted to find out if I could get in there to catch a quick photo. I decided to play limbo with the huge dead trees, with my boots slipping on the wet moss slickened creek bed, to try to capture one more shot of this elusive waterfall. When I got about half way in to the falls, I actually told myself (out loud), "I'm way too old to be doing this kind of stuff"... but I was already committed to the mission, so I continued on. I eventually made it past all of the clutter and stood up. I liked what I saw! Once I got my footing under control, I mounted my camera on the tripod and started shooting away. Pictured above is the result of my efforts.
When you cross the bridge below Mohican, be sure to take a look up the small tributary that the bridge spans... it's still worth a quick peak. If you feel a little crazy, climb on in there and get a good view.
This spot is located in Ganoga Glen on a tributary of Kitchen Creek, in Ricketts Glen State Park.
This photograph was captured on Thursday, October 10th, 2013. The image was taken with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 5D DSLR body. The shutter speed was 1.0 second @ ISO 100. Gene Walls replied:
Thanks a bunch, Eti! I did stay here for quite a while. Although, it was mostly because the spot was so difficult to get in and out from. I needed to rest before I started crawling back out. Kindest wishes, Gene
