Description
This is the Millmont Covered Bridge, which is also referred to as the "Glen Iron" or "Old Red" Covered Bridge. The "Millmont" is an amazing icon of Union County and America's early history. The bridge had been closed since 2002, due to serious deterioration, but it is now open to traffic again. It proudly graces the Pennsylvania landscape, exactly where it has always stood since the mid 1800s.
In 2011, the Union County Commissioners oversaw completion the Millmont Covered Bridge's total restoration. It took over six years and three million dollars (of mostly taxpayer's money) to save this structure from certain demise. All of the people whom I have spoken to tell me that they think the results have proven to be a very worthwhile investment. I wholeheartedly agree!
The Millmont Covered Bridge crosses Penns Creek on Bridge Road, just south of Millmont, PA, USA. It is our region's longest covered span, with a total length of 154 feet. This bridge was originally built in 1855 using the "Burr Arch" design. The Millmont Covered Bridge was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 8, 1980.
