Description
The September butterflies were extremely active on Emerald Isle. just off the mainland shores of southern North Carolina, USA. This a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, which looked a lot like a Monarch to me, until I got a much closer view with my macro lens. An on-line search revealed that this is a non-migratory relative of the Monarch and Queen species, with the scientific name of Agraulis vanillae.
These gorgeous butterflies were decorating the entire landscape when we visited the OBX last week (mid September). I took a few minutes to capture several closeups of these beautiful creatures, while my toes were not getting splashed by the warm Atlantic surf.
The photo was taken on September 13th, 2012 with a Canon EOS 30D, through a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. The aperture was wide open with a shutter speed of 1/5000 sec, to freeze the nearly constant motion of the busy butterfly.

Awesome capture Gene! Spring is here and the butterflies are emerging! v/f
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you so much, Tessa! Unfortunately, there are no butterflies for us up north quite yet. A snowstorm is on its way in our direction. Spring will have to wait a little longer to visit the frozen hills of Pennsylvania. Kindest regards, Gene
