Description
The Hillsgrove Covered Bridge crosses Loyalsock Creek on Covered Bridge Road (off of Splash Dam Road) along PA Route 87, 26 miles north of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, USA. This site is about five miles south of Forksvill, PA, and can be seen while driving by on RT-87. It is Sullivan County's longest covered span, with a total length of 171 feet. This bridge was originally built in 1850 using the "Burr Arch" design. The Hillsgrove Covered Bridge was the very first Pennsylvania covered bridge that was ever officially listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. That proclamation was issued on July 2, 1973.
This bridge had been badly damage by two terrible tropical storms named Irene and Lee, last year in late September. The span had to be closed because it was no longer safe to use. The Sullivan County Commissioners quickly hired a highly experienced architectural firm, LDG, and a dedicated construction company to repair this severely damaged structure. The restoration was completed in a surprisingly short time and the newly refurbished bridge was reopened to traffic two weeks before this photo was taken.
This photograph was taken on December 5th, 2012, with a Canon EOS 5D camera, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 40mm focal length. The aperture was f/9 with a 1/8th second exposure @ ISO 100. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod in the flowing water of Loyalsock Creek.

Thanks a lot, Richard! These historic covered bridges are among the oldest structures found in our area. We hold them in very high regard and take great care to keep them looking just as they did when they were built. Kindest wishes, Gene
