Description
Welcome to the Adams Waterfall in Ricketts Glen State Park. It was a warm August evening, with the sun disappearing behind the mountain ridge to the west. Lush summer greenery was on display everywhere, in all its glorious seasonal splendor. Mosses, lichens and ferns covered the layered canyon walls that had been carved out of ancient sedimentary rock by the waters of Kitchen Creek.
This is the last waterfall that I needed to photograph to complete my full set of summertime views of all of the falls in Ricketts Glen. Even though Adams is the most convenient waterfall to experience in the glen, somehow, I had never captured a summertime shot here that made me feel that it was my best work. On this trip back home from Wilkes-Barre, I only visited this one site, so I took extra time to try to capture Adams Falls as faithfully as possible.
As of today, all of my spring, summer and autumn photos are “in the can”. Only three winter captures are required for my “Ricketts Glen: In Every Season” project to be finished.
This spot is conveniently located at the southern tip of the park’s very popular wilderness area. The site is just a few steps away from the “Evergreen” parking area on RT-118. It is, by far, the easiest to reach waterfall in the entire park. That makes this the perfect place to end the day in Ricketts Glen State Park.
This photograph was captured on August 25th, 2014, with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 5D DSLR body. The aperture was set to f/9 with a shutter speed of 1/15th of a second, in full manual mode. The lens was at the 17mm focal length. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a 222 “pistol Grip” head. The image is presented “straight from the camera” (As-Is), with no enhancements or editing.
Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, less than half way to Williamsport from Wilkes Barre, PA.
