In it's day, this was a very expensive barn and I would love to know it's history. I can tell you one thing--that it had a drive through haymow and that the livestock was very secure in the "basement". Many of these old barns didn't have a nail in them--all wooden pegged. It was built to stand and it'll most likely be there until someone pulls it down. What an interesting structure. What an interesting photo. Thanks so much for sharing.

Gene Walls replied:

Thank you very kindly, Mary! Obviously, you are well versed in barn design. I'm no expert, I just enjoy seeing this old structure whenever get out that way. I enjoy seeing things that were truly built to last. We have a lot of historic barns in this area, many from the mid 1700's. I have photographed quite a few of them. Most of my barn pictures are displayed here, in my portfolio Gallery titled "Farmland". I'm so glad you enjoyed this shot. Best regards, Gene

Artist's Description

Heavy snow was quickly covering this very old barn. No worries about that, the craftsmen who build this sturdy building knew exactly what they were doing. The structure is as solid as a rock, despite its advanced age.

Many coats of paint have long since faded away; leaving a beautiful patina that gives this barn its special times-past character. This "comfortable as an old shoe" look cannot be duplicated without the passing of many decades, through every imaginable weather related assault.

This great old family farm is located on RT-442, just east of Clarkstown, PA in Lycoming County.

This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D body fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens, at the 24mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/500th sec at f/4. ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto 055 tripod and 222 head were used with a remote shutter release cable.

Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated.

I was born in the wild hills of West Virginia, raised in western Maryland and currently live in north central Pennsylvania, USA. My higher education includes Theological Studies, Electronics Engineering, Audio Engineering and Visual Arts. I taught a Media course at Pennsylvania College of Technology (Penn State Affiliate). Photography has been an integral part of my life since the mid 1960's. Capturing the beauty and complexity of nature is my main interest, from macro close-ups to wide vistas views ...and everything in between. Natural waterfalls are the most frequent photographic subjects found at the business end of my lens. Historic Covered Bridges and farmland scenes are also very close to my heart, but any visually interesting...
