Artist's Description
The Hayes Bridge was built in 1882 to span Buffalo Creek, two miles west of Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, USA. The bridge was officially listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places on February 8, 1980 (WGN #38-60-02).
The Hayes Covered Bridge is maintained by the Union County Commissioners from Lewisburg, PA. The roof has some condition issues and the exterior boards could really use a new coat of paint. A few replaced side boards were painted a different shade of red that does not match the rest of the bridge. The structure is in serviceable condition and it accommodates a considerable amount of daily traffic. Several cars and vans passed through the bridge during the short time I was there to capture this shot. This wonderful old relic of Pennsylvanias rich past still stands proudly, transporting modern visitors back to a much harder but simpler time.
