R. B. Ricketts Falls is always a fantastic waterfall to experience, in every season of the year. On this calm October evening, it was an even more special treat. For as long as I can remember, all the way back to the late 1970s, there has always been a huge fallen tree here that obscured the view of this complex waterfall site. That enormous tree trunk had been leaning against the cliff, close to where the smaller tributary feeds into the plunge pool, to the right of the main waterfall.
When I arrived this evening, I was thrilled to see that, finally, the old dead tree had been taken down by the record breaking rains and violent runoff of 2011. You can still see the broken remains of the tree, hanging out over the cliff. For the first time ever, It was a thrill to enjoy this amazing landmark, with a completely clear view of the entire scene. Then, just to make this fantastic view even more astonishing, the setting sun was lighting the forest above the falls with an unforgettable golden glow. Thank you, Mother Nature!
This photo was captured in the evening of October 18th, 2011, shortly before sunset. The shot was taken with a Canon 30D DSLR, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 25mm focal length. The exposure was 2 seconds @ f/13. The ISO was set to 125 and a ND-4 Neutral Density filter was used, no CP for this one. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, with a Manfrotto 222 Pistol Grip head.
Ricketts Glen is located near the small village of Red Rock, PA, at the junction of Pennsylvania State Routes 118 and 487. The park is about midway between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, in the north eastern region of the USA.
