Description
Revisiting the Keefer Mill covered bridge on a cold gray winter day revealed the real strength and character of this great early American masterpiece of civil engineering. The bridge currently needs a little cosmetic work (to paint over the stupid "tags" left by people too young, or not intelligent enough, to appreciate the true significance of this wonderful historical treasure). Otherwise, this is an extremely stately structure. It still serves the community very well, allowing most cars and small trucks to safely cross the meandering Chillisquaque Creek.
The historic Keefer Mill Covered Bridge was built in 1853 by William Butle and was named for George Keefer, who was the owner of the mill that supplied the lumber. This bridge crosses the Chillesquaque Creek between Washingtonville and Limestoneville in Mountour County, PA. It is located in the central region of Pennsylvania, USA. The bridge still provides a valuable public service, as it has always done since the early 1850s.
The bridge was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1979. It was fully restored in July of 1983.
The photo was shot with a Canon EOS 10D body fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens, set to the 19mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/10th sec at f/8. The ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto, tripod was used with a Manfrotto 222 head. An electronic remote shutter release cable was also employed here.
