Description
This young Amish couple was racing up the snowy hill in an open buggy. It immediately made me think of an odd phrase... "Amish Hot Rod".
She was holding the big umbrella over both of their heads as he was "encouraging" the horse around a sharp turn. They were traveling so fast that I was only able to snap two frames before the buggy disappeared in my rear view mirror. This is the second frame that I was able to catch.
This action shot was captured just east of Clarkstown, PA, in the Muncy Valley farming region.
The photo was shot handheld through my windshield, with a Canon EOS 10D DSLR camera fitted with a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L telephoto zoom lens @ 35mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/125th sec at f/9.5, ISO 100.
Unfortunately, my camera was locked on to a heavy tripod when this unusual sight appeared in front of me, so I had to wrestle the whole camera / tripod contraption up to my eye to catch the shot.
No chance to change any settings... just a quick grab, aim, manually focus and shoot! (the lens was still in manual focus mode from the last photos I had taken a few minutes earlier.) The shutter speed was too slow to totally "freeze" the motion, but I like the "energy" that the slight blur portrays. I'm pretty sure that this was a "once in my lifetime" event. I am so glad I was at the right place at that incredibly exhilaration moment.

Thanks a lot, Donna. The Amish are the closet thing we have here to the colorful old west characters in your neck of the woods. Best wishes, Gene
